The basics

What is a US ESTA, and why do you need one?

ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It is an online pre-screening check run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for travellers from Visa Waiver Program countries. It is not a visa — it is permission to board a plane or ship bound for the United States.

2 yearsValid from approval, or until your passport expires
90 daysMaximum stay per visit
Multiple entriesRe-enter as often as you like while it is valid
Online onlyNo embassy visit, no interview

Why it matters

Why you need an ESTA

Without an approved authorization, an eligible traveller cannot legally begin the journey to the United States.

1

Airlines check it before boarding

Carriers verify your authorization electronically against your passport. No approval on file means you are denied boarding at your departure airport.

2

It replaces the visa process

For short tourism, business or transit trips, an ESTA lets eligible travellers skip the embassy appointment, the interview and the visa paperwork entirely.

3

It is a security pre-check

Your details are screened against U.S. law-enforcement and security databases before departure, which is why authorization must be in place ahead of travel rather than on arrival.

Good to know

What an ESTA does and does not do

It authorizes travel, not entry. The final decision is made by a border officer when you arrive at a U.S. port of entry.

It is tied to your passport. A valid e-passport with a biometric chip is required, and a new passport means a new ESTA.

It covers tourism, business and transit. Paid employment, journalism assignments, permanent study and long stays require a visa instead.

Every traveller needs one. Including infants and children, regardless of whether they travel on a family booking.

Apply well before departure. Most decisions come through within 72 hours, so applying at the airport is a risk not worth taking.

Visa Waiver Program

Who needs an ESTA?

Citizens and nationals of Visa Waiver Program countries need an ESTA to travel to the US without a visa. If your country is not on the list, you need a US visa instead.

Note: the Visa Waiver Program roster changes as countries are designated or removed. Always confirm your country's current status with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security before booking.
